Cycle for a smoothie at NHS health event

Date published: 29 September 2008

Residents in Heywood can cycle themselves a smoothie this weekend as part of a local NHS road show to discuss future health plans.

The ‘Speak Up! It’s Your Health’ event, led by NHS Heywood, Middleton and Rochdale, is being held at the Heywood Civic Centre on Saturday (4 October) from 10am to 5pm.

As well as using pedal power to blend fresh fruit into a tasty, healthy drink, visitors will also be able to get advice on diet, exercise and how to quit smoking. People will also have to chance to test their fitness on a Wii Fit.

But the PCT also wants your help.

It receives more than £330 million from the Government to spend on health services and it is looking how best to use this money over the next five years to improve the health of the local community.

The public has the chance to tell NHS representatives what they think about future health initiatives and what they would like to be done.

Trevor Purt, Chief Executive from NHS HMR said: “Your views and comments are really important to us as we really want you to get involved in shaping the health services for the future.

“There will be many health activities taking place in Heywood on Saturday, and I’d encourage everyone to come down and take part.”

Future plans include developing more care closer to home, developing more GP and dental services, ensuring high quality hospital care, and improving mental health as well as that of children and young people, and adult and older peoples’ services.

Those completing feedback forms will be entered into a free prize draw to win a choice of a Nintendo Wii and Wii Fit console, a weekend break for two or a 12 month leisure pass for two.

The consultation period will run until 7 November and the final plan will be published in March 2009.
