Trading standards issues warning about replacement mobile phone chargers

The results of the tests showed that four out of ten chargers failed to comply with safety standards (pictured: this charger was found not to comply)
A warning has been issued for those buying replacement mobile phone chargers.
Rochdale Council’s Trading Standards team recently bought chargers from shops within the borough which were sent away for analysis.
The results showed that a shocking four in ten of the chargers tested failed to comply with safety standards.
Counterfeit chargers or those that have been imported into the UK without the proper testing can carry safety risks, including electric shocks and fires.
What to look for
• Check there is at least 9.5mm between the edge of the pins and the edge of the charger – if the distance is less, there is a risk of electric shock when plugging in and unplugging from a socket
• If the charger does not easily plug into a socket, the pins may be the wrong size or length, or the distance between the pins may be wrong
• Look for a manufacturer’s brand name or logo, model and batch number
• Check for a CE mark – a declaration by the manufacturer that the product meets all the safety requirements of European law. Don’t solely rely on this as a guarantee though as they can be easily forged
• Check the output voltage and current ratings marked on the charger and your device are the same
• Adequate warnings and instructions must be provided
