Saint George's cross flies high above Heywood

Date published: 25 April 2022

The Saint George cross flew high above Heywood Memorial Gardens on Saturday (23 April).

The flag was raised on the patron saint's feast day by the Heywood Veterans Association with MP Chris Clarkson in attendance.

Members of the association also managed to raise just over £300 with a collection in Heywood and Middleton pubs.

Vice chairman of the Heywood Veterans Association, Martin Orson, said: “Thank you to the good people of Heywood and Middleton for their generous donations and support.”

Saint George is celebrated the world over, having been born into a rich Christian family in Turkey before joining the Roman army.

According to legend, Saint George slew a dragon which had been terrorising a village.
