HMR Circle Dinner Drivers service extended to cover Hurstead as the service celebrates one year

Date published: 14 April 2022

The HMR Circle Dinner Drivers service has been extended to cover Hurstead as the service celebrates one year.

Dinner Drivers, in partnership with The Veterans Food Company and Rochdale Boroughwide Housing (RBH), is based on the idea of meals-on-wheels and aims to deliver a two-course meal directly to older people's doors, helping them enjoy a professionally made, nutritious meal with the bonus of staying connected to their community.

The HMR Circle Dinner Drivers arrived at staggered intervals to collect their pre-arranged dinner drops, with clear instruction on any special requirements, with a plan for lunches to be delivered to people's door weekly between 12noon and 1pm.

A staggering 2,000 meals have been delivered in that year to local Circle members in Kirkholt, Balderstone, Turf Hill, Queensway, Kingsway, Firgrove, Milnrow, Newhey, Norden, Falinge, Spotland, Shawclough, and Bamford.

The lucky recipient of the 2,000th meal was June, who has been ordering the meals from the start. Chef Ken and volunteer driver Allan presented June with a box of Celebrations as a prize.

Recipients - aged over 50 – this week enjoyed cheese and onion tart with a cheese, leek and mushroom sauce with a side of croquette potatoes and herb buttered cabbage. Pudding was a chocolate fudge slice with cinnamon cream, chocolate sprinkles and blueberries.

Heywood, Middleton and Rochdale (HMR) Circle is a not-for-profit community interest company which works to reduce social isolation in older people through social events, practical support, befriending and a volunteer drivers service.
