Women are more likely than men to be an affected other because of their partner or spouse is engaging in harmful gambling
A new, first of its kind programme is aiming to support women in Rochdale, Bury and Oldham who have been affected by gambling harms.
The ‘Patchwork programme’ by Deal Me Out CIC will run over 24 weeks, taking place online with every sixth session comprising of a live meet. The sessions aim to support and empower women whilst encouraging them to learn new skills.
This includes women who have experienced addiction or are 'affected others'.
Women are more likely than men to be an 'affected other' due to their partner or spouse engaging in harmful gambling.
Statistics also suggest that one million women in Great Britain could be at risk of experiencing harm from gambling, whilst BeGambleAware says as many as two in five of those refrain from seeking help or treatment due to a perceived stigma.
Head of community development and engagement, Beth Sammut, said: "Women feel shame and embarrassment, and those who do seek support are often directed to Gamblers Anonymous which – whilst their work is fantastic – is a male dominated space.
"The Patchwork programme strives to change this. I have lived in Rochdale my whole life and feel incredibly proud to be launching the Patchwork programme in my hometown."
The programme has been funded by Greater Manchester Combined Authority.
The sessions are due to start on Tuesday 3 May 2022. Those who are interested can email: hello@patchworkgroup.org.
