Boro' Brass place second in Holme Valley Brass Band Contest

Date published: 06 April 2022

Local band Boro' Brass walked away with a superb second-place finish in their latest competition on Sunday 3 April.

The band, which is made up of players from around the Littleborough area, took part in the annual Holme Valley Brass Band Contest in Holmfirth, West Yorkshire, and earned plaudits from the judge on their way to the runners up prize.

Showing off their skills by performing a variety of different music styles, the amateur musicians gained recognition for their renditions of the march 'Castell Coch', Bobby Darin's 'Mack The Knife' and the classic movie theme 'Conquest Of Paradise', before rounding off the set with The Beatles' 'Hey Jude'.

The adjudicator praised the band's set, stating in his notes, "overall, it was a fine show; accurate and polished."

Musical Director Laura Whittaker said: "After hosting our own concerts, it was a great experience for the band to compete in an event like this, and I couldn't be prouder of how they performed.

"All the time and effort put in by our band members paid off, which certainly shows in the result and our adjudication.

"We're looking forward to competing again in more events later this year."

As well as their brilliant result, there was further cause for celebration among the band as 10-year-old cornet player Harry Dunning received a special award as the youngest player in the competition, along with a lesson from world-renowned cornet player and adjudicator of the event, Roger Webster.

Boro' Brass will be back on stage on the evening of Saturday 14 May at Littleborough Cricket Club, performing a concert of crowd-pleasing favourites alongside the Littleborough Training Band and Littleborough Brass Band.

Tickets are available via Facebook, and all money raised will go back towards the bands.
