Unique 'DK' gathering at Fireground Museum

Date published: 06 April 2022

Greater Manchester’s new museum of firefighting, Fireground on Maclure Road, Rochdale, is staging a unique road transport event on Saturday 21 May 2022.

'DK DAY' celebrates the town’s original registration plate 'DK' with a never-before-seen gathering of vehicles bearing that mark.

Pride of place will be DK 1 – the Mayoral car of Rochdale Metropolitan Borough, whilst the museum’s own DK-registered fire appliances - (PDK 717, a 1957 Dennis and TDK 999 K and 1971 ERF) will also be on display.

Rochdale became the first council in Greater Manchester to officially use an electrical mayoral car - a specially designed Kia Niro purchased from Premier Kia - for its civic engagements in 2019.

The event is open to all forms of DK-registered transport, including, cars, commercials, buses and coaches, emergency service vehicles, motor cycles, agricultural and steam, provided they have the correct number plate.

Owners of appropriate vehicles in the following categories are welcome to join this unusual event :

  • 2-letter (eg DK ----)                             (1st reg 1903-1935)
  • 3-letter (eg ADK ---)                            (1st reg1935-1961)
  • 2- and 3-letter reversed (eg ----DK)   (1st reg 1961-1963)
  • Year Suffix (eg ADK --- A)                  (1st reg 1963-1974)

Please note: personalised or private plated vehicles will also be accepted if the mark was first issued as above, but post 1975 'DK' vehicles registered in Greater Manchester will not be eligible.

There will also be a temporary exhibition on the history of the DK plate.
