Celebrating Ramadan in 2022

Date published: 04 April 2022

Ramadan is the 9th month of the Islamic calendar and is observed worldwide by Muslims as a month for fasting. It is the month when the Holy Qur’an was revealed and honours the values at the heart of Islam.

Mosques are at the centre of activities associated with Ramadan. It is a month of giving charity, looking after others, showing compassion and mercy. It’s about self-reflection and devotion to the creator. It’s a time for reflection and meditation.

This year Rochdale Council of Mosques (RCM) has advised all mosques in the borough that congregational prayers are now permissible without any restrictions. Muslims within the community will once again be able to fully immerse themselves in congregational worship. Many families are looking forward to attending their local Mosques and reinvigorating their spiritual health.

Covid-19 is still with us and mosque will continue to take general precautions to ensure their congregations and the wider community remains safe. Rochdale Council of Mosques will continue to work with Public Health in promoting safe practices across all Mosques.

Tahir Mahmood, Chair of Rochdale Council of Mosques said: "We will continue to advise people to stay at home if they are unwell and not attend the extra late evening congregational Taraaweeh prayers in the Mosque. The Mosques have played an instrumental role in the rollout of the vaccine. We continue to encourage take-up of the vaccine to keep ourselves and the community safe.”

"The last few years have been very traumatic and difficult for many families, who have suffered ill health and the loss of loved ones. On behalf of RCM, our condolences. Peace and blessings to everyone in the Borough.

"The month of Ramadan commenced on Sunday the 3rd of April. We look forward to welcoming families back into the Mosques and hope that Ramadan in our Mosques will be a safe and pleasant experience. RCM would like to wish everyone marking this month of fasting a very happy, healthy and peaceful Ramadan.”
