Volunteers clean up Norden for Great British Spring Clean

Date published: 04 April 2022

Over 100 volunteers armed with litter pickers took to the streets of Norden and Birtle on Saturday (2 April) for the annual Norden Great British Spring Clean.

Volunteers and groups like The Birtle Trust, NEEVA Norden Environmental & Economic Village Association, Norden In Bloom, The Duke of Edinburgh's Award, The Friends of Taylor Park and The Friends of Ashworth Valley collected a staggering 141 bags of rubbish – plus a few larger items such as tyres and a dead tree.

Ashworth View Nursery, Cutgate Preschool, H Bells and Sons and the 51st Norden Brownies and Guides got the volunteers off to a flying start earlier in the week.

Volunteers were joined on the day by Norden ward councillors Jim Gartside and Peter Winkler, who got stuck in making the village a cleaner place.

The event was sponsored by the Norden Co-op, which supplied refreshments, and the Norden Bowling & Social Club, which hosted and cooked for all the volunteers after their hard work.

Local Keep Britain Tidy #LitterHeroes ambassador, Paul Ellison said: “I would like to thank each and every volunteer for again making this year another litter-busting event.

“Thank you to the councillors for getting stuck in, and a big shout out to Rochdale Borough Council for collecting the rubbish and the extra litter-picking equipment.

“A big thank you also goes to the Norden Co-op and the Norden Bowling & Social Club for sponsoring the event, and thank you to Doliz Miah for capturing some quality photos during the event.”
