Eight-year-old Zaara conquers Scafell Pike to raise £500 for Springhill Hospice

Date published: 31 March 2022

An eight-year-old girl from Rochdale has helped raise more than £500 for Springhill Hospice after climbing Scafell Pike last weekend.

Zaara Miah completed the climb on Saturday (26 March) in just over six hours with her father, Doliz, plus members of the non-profit Bangladeshi Arts & Sports Association (BASA) and Greater Manchester Police.

After successfully climbing Snowdon last year, Zaara wanted to raise money for the hospice again, and also wants to climb Ben Nevis in the future to complete all three national peaks.

Zaara and Doliz were joined by Mabs Rahman, Parves Miah, Harrison Cunliffe, Tahir Ali, Hassan Ahmed, Seju Miah, Anwar Ali, Murrad Amin and Foysul Islam.

Doliz said: “As part of Basa Rochdale, we have been running a few different projects including a 10-week health and fitness camp, plus multiple hiking expeditions have been organised to help raise awareness for mental health and wellbeing and the importance of community cohesion.

“As parents, myself and wife Jenny are ever so proud of ‘little legs’. Zaara simply does not give up and isn’t fazed by the grand challenge she sets herself. Little brother Zac, who is six, would also like to join on one of our hikes in the near future and [their other sibling] Zander is still too young at just two.”

He added: “A special mention must go to another member of the Basa management team, Tahir 'Taz' Ali who was involved in an RTA in September 2020. This weekend Taz joined Basa to climb Scafell and also play in his first football match since the accident.

“A person who never gave up, he went through a very traumatic time on his road to recovery with multiple fractures to his leg, skull and eye socket.

“His road to recovery has been somewhat inspirational to the rest of Basa.”

If you would like to make a donation, Zaara's JustGiving page is still active.
