Man dies after collision in Heywood

A man has died after the car he was travelling in crashed into a building in Heywood on Sunday (20 March).

A BMW crashed after being pursued by police at about 11.45pm on Rochdale Road East.

The occupants of the BMW, two men aged 27 and 18, were taken to Salford Royal Hospital with serious head injuries.

The 27-year-old – named locally as Prosper Mhepo, a mental health worker with CAMHS (Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services) – has since sadly died and a crowdfunding campaign has been launched to support his family and loved ones.
 


The Independent Office for Police Conduct has confirmed it is investigating the fatal collision after it was referred to them by GMP.

A spokesperson for the IOPC said: “We are independently investigating following a fatal collision in the Heywood area on Sunday (20 March).

“We received a referral from Greater Manchester Police due to the fact the collision, on Rochdale Road East, took place after a short pursuit.

“IOPC investigators attended the scene and police post-incident procedures, and have started collating and reviewing evidence.

“Evidence gathered at this stage shows a BMW was briefly pursued by officers at around 11.45pm before being involved in a collision.

“The occupants of the BMW, two men aged 27 and 18, were taken to Salford Royal Hospital with serious head injuries. The 27-year-old has since sadly died.

“Our thoughts are with all those affected by this tragic incident.”
