Expert doctors invite community to come and get safe fasting advice for Ramadan

Date published: 24 March 2022

Three doctors who are experts in their fields will be at Madina Masjid Mosque in Rochdale on Sunday (27 March) to give a talk about safe fasting in Ramadan.

The Safe Fasting event is free to attend and open to anyone who wants to find out more about fasting safely and how to stay healthy in general.

Both Professor Philip Kalra, director of research and innovation, Northern Care Alliance NHS Foundation Trust (NCA), who is an expert in kidney function, and Dr Naveed Younis, from Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust, who is a diabetes specialist, will be talking at the event, and advising how people can fast safely and look after their general health.

Dr Stuart Stewart, who is the Research Ambassador at Rochdale Care Organisation, part of the NCA, will be talking about how research can improve health in Rochdale and how members of the community can get involved.

Dr Stewart said: “As we approach the holy month of Ramadan which sees many Muslims fast during daylight hours, we wish to support those who may have a range of health conditions, but especially diabetes, in safe fasting.

“We are excited to deliver this educational event on safe fasting during Ramadan in collaboration with UKIM at the Madina Masjid mosque in Rochdale and everyone is welcome.”

Mohammed Tariq, BAME Staff Network Chair at Rochdale Care Organisation said: “Rochdale Care Organisation recognises the important support that many members of the local community have provided to healthcare staff during the toughest parts of the pandemic and wish to develop this relationship further, giving back and exploring ways we can work together to improve health for all.”

The event starts at 2.15pm with a meet and greet, before moving into the Safe Fasting talk at 2.45pm. At 3.15pm the talk about health research opportunities for the Rochdale community begins.

At 3.30pm the event will finish and there will be an opportunity for the audience to ask questions.
