Two fires in Heywood over weekend

Date published: 21 March 2022

Firefighters had a busy weekend in Heywood with two fires on George Street and Tower Street on Saturday and Sunday – fortunately, no-one was injured in either incident.

The former Heywood Pub on Tower Street, was hit by a blaze over several hours on Sunday, which saw seven fire engines and an aerial appliance at the scene. Firefighters were in attendance for several hours, tackling the fire on the first floor of the derelict pub.

A spokesperson for GMFRS said: “The fire involved the first floor of a derelict property. Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used jets and hose reels to extinguish the fire. Firefighters were in attendance for several hours.”

The previous afternoon, fire engines from Bury, Broughton and Blackley rushed to the Birtle View Medical Practice to a fire in an external bin store.

The GMFRS spokesperson added: “The fire involved an external bin store. Fire crews used a hose reel, a thermal imaging camera and a hearth kit to extinguish the fire. Firefighters were in attendance for just under one hour.”

Staff from the GP surgery have confirmed the building is fine and the fire has had no effect on business.

Posting on Facebook on Saturday evening, they said: “Investigations still underway. There was nobody in the building and the building is fine; we are still operational.

“There is a smell of smoke in the building that we hope will have gone by Monday morning. We are all fine; thank you for the concern we have seen on Facebook pages.”
