Deeplish Community Centre launches cancer awareness campaign

Date published: 17 March 2022

A new cancer awareness campaign has been launched for BAME communities (Black, Asian, Minority Ethnic) at Deeplish Community Centre.

The campaign, supported by the charity Answer Cancer and Salford CVS, was launched last month in front of local and national leaders including the Secretary of State for Health, Sajid Javid, leader of Rochdale Borough Council, Neil Emmott and Steve Rumbelow, chief executive of the council.

The project aims to promote healthy lifestyles, health promotion, and training volunteers and champions in the community to raise awareness of cancer amongst BAME communities. It also aims to provide important information about cancer screening programmes, early detection, treatment and care for patients.

Chair of Deeplish Community Centre, Mohammed Saleem said: “We are pleased to work with local and regional partners in addressing local health and wellbeing issues as well as dedicated and focused work on cancer awareness and screening.

“We are proud to work with Salford CVS and Answer Cancer in connecting with local people and reducing the fears and myths about cancer and its treatment.

“We are grateful for their support, guidance and partnership work in this project.”

The campaign will offer weekly sessions, promote wellbeing, information and awareness sessions as well as in house training opportunities, linking with Greater Manchester health care and Answer Cancer.
