Former Manchester United Footballer Michael Carrick visits Middleton school

Date published: 19 March 2022

Teenagers at Middleton Technology School were treated to a surprise welcome by former Manchester United midfielder and Champions League winner, Michael Carrick.

Youngsters from the school and the local community were able to ask the footballer questions about his career, how he got into football and what he hopes to do now in his retirement.

Carrick, who made 464 appearances for the Red Devils and won five Premier League titles, visited Middleton Technology School as part of his work with the Michael Carrick Foundation.

His visit coincided with the Streets Red football programme, run by the Manchester United Foundation.

Mo Handongwe, Manchester United Foundation said: “We introduced our Street Reds football initiative at Middleton to give young people in the area an opportunity to pursue their interest in playing, leading, and coaching the beautiful game.

“We offer free sessions and alternative activities for young people, with the opportunity to learn new skills and gain qualifications in a supportive and positive environment. It was great to see Michael interact so genuinely with the children.

“Additionally, it’s been brilliant for the Manchester United Foundation to be able to provide children with positive role models, such as Michael, to help support their educational development.”

Staying for the full three hours and meeting with every age group, the former England international – and most recently interim manager at Old Trafford – also hosted a few sessions and provided every single youngster with a brand-new pair of football boots, courtesy of the Michael Carrick Foundation.

For the young locals in attendance, the gift capped off a particularly unforgettable Friday night’s worth of football.
