Rochdale first hospital in Greater Manchester offering novel prostate treatment on the NHS

Rochdale Infirmary is offering a new treatment for men with bladder outflow obstruction due to Benign Prostate Hyperplasia (BPH), an enlargement of the prostate gland.

The new minimally invasive treatment, “REZUM”, comes in the form of water vapour therapy, which shrinks the prostate. This can be done as a day case procedure with minimal complications in comparison to some other more invasive techniques.

Men who suffer from BPH often have to pass urine frequently during the night and day. In many cases, they find their urinary flow poor and may even get to a point they cannot urinate at all.

Surgeons working at the NCA, operating out of Rochdale, have received specialist training to deliver the procedure. They successfully carried out their first few ‘REZUM’ procedures on 15 February 2022.

Sotonye Tolofari, consultant urological surgeon, said: “I am delighted that we can now offer this novel treatment for Benign Prostate Hyperplasia. This means we can now offer a much more holistic approach to our patients by offering them almost all modalities of treatment for this very common condition.

“To be able to do this as a low-risk day case procedure really gives our patients peace of mind. I believe we are the first trust in Greater Manchester to do so, which is fantastic news for our service and our patients.”
