St Michael’s CofE Primary School in Alkrington plants trees for Queen’s Green Canopy

Date published: 08 March 2022

Pupils at St Michael’s CofE Primary School in Alkrington have planted scores of tree at the school for the Queen’s Green Canopy.

Each child in the school was involved in the planting of 100 tree saplings last week, including silver birch, rowan, hazel, wild cherry, crab-apple, hawthorn, dogrose, dogwood, oak and blackthorn.

A tree has also been planted specially for the Queen’s jubilee later this year with a specially mounted plinth donated by Sign and Print.

The trees were given to the school by the Woodland Trust and parents and grandparents were also invited to partake in the planting.

Headteacher Caroline McKeating said: “We have been very busy at St Michael’s school planting trees for the Queen’s Green Canopy.

“We planted one hazel at the entrance to our school garden with a plaque made by a local councillor, Peter Winkler, to mark this very special occasion.

“Not content with one tree, the ladies who run the school’s garden gang (they were also responsible for setting up the garden and continue to help maintain it) also applied to the Woodland Trust for more saplings so we could all ‘Plant a Tree for the Jubilee’.

“Despite the weather and the mud, over three afternoons, parents and grandparents joined the children from each class and together we have planted over 100 saplings.”
