School children plant over 100 trees as part of the Queen’s Green Canopy project

Date published: 05 March 2022

The pupils at St John with St Michael CE Primary School in Shawforth, Rochdale, have planted an incredible 112 trees on their school site, as part of the Pennine Lancashire Treescapes Project.

Every single child in the school was involved in the planting and a variety of trees were planted, including oak trees and fruit trees.

Each tree has been registered with The Queen’s Green Canopy project.

Not only have the children planted trees, but they have also had the opportunity to learn about the important role trees play to help sustain our planet and environment. One of the school’s Christian ethos values is hope, and for every tree planted demonstrates hope for our future.

Headteacher Steven Rooney said: "Teaching our children about the environment, and most importantly, how to help protect it, is now the most crucial area of learning within our geography curriculum. After all, it is our children who will develop the innovative solutions to tackle climate change in the future. Therefore, it is our duty as teachers to plant the seed of curiosity and ambition for our children to take forward for the rest of their lives.

"I'm delighted that our school is taking part in the tree planting campaign, and registering all 112 trees with The Queen’s Green Canopy is just wonderful. The children had a fantastic day learning lots of new skills and it was wonderful to see them helping and supporting each other.

The Year 6 children worked with the nursery children and took great care helping them, which was just wonderful to see."
