Man arrested after 80-year-old receives multiple fractures and facial injuries in 'unprovoked attack'

A man has been arrested after an 80-year-old man and his son were assaulted in Rochdale last weekend.

The victims were attacked shortly after 10pm on Saturday 5 February outside the Natwest Bank on Packer Street and the elderly gentleman sustained multiple fractures and facial injuries.

A 25-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of assault and is being questioned in custody but officers are still looking for a second suspect believed to have been involved in the attack.

Detective Constable Melanie Jeffery, of Rochdale CID, said: "This appears to have been an unprovoked attack on an elderly gentleman and his son who were walking for a taxi.

"CCTV of the incident has been obtained but there may also have been a number of witnesses to the incident in the vicinity and we ask for them to come forward."
