RBH acquires Brickcroft Social Club site

Date published: 10 February 2022

The former Brickcroft Social Club on High Street, Rochdale, has been purchased by local mutual housing provider Rochdale Boroughwide Housing.

After closing during the pandemic, it was announced on social media in May 2021 that the Brickcroft would not reopen.

Rochdale Boroughwide Housing has moved to acquire the site for housing, rather than it remaining derelict. The acquisition has been supported by funding from Rochdale Borough Council’s successful Towns Fund bid, announced last year.

Clare Tostevin, RBH Director of Growth, said: "We're investing millions of pounds to make sure that we can deliver the homes in Rochdale town centre that local people need and deserve.

“I know that many residents will have happy memories of Brickcroft Social Club, and our new homes will help a new generation of residents to create great memories on this site.

“We're looking forward to working with the local community to develop our plans for new homes here."

Andrew Johnson, local resident and elected tenant member of the RBH Representative Body, said: “I'm really pleased that we will now be able to develop the Brickcroft site to help us build new homes as well as deliver the quality and mix of homes that local people need.”

Paul Simkiss, owner of Simkiss Controls Ltd and chair of Rochdale’s Town’s Fund Board, which put together the successful bid, said: “This is an important milestone, as it’s the first project of many which will be delivered using the £23.6m Towns Fund investment which we successfully bid for last year.

“This exciting development will support wider plans to create high quality housing, particularly on brownfield sites, and close to our thriving town centres, to support our growing population and help us attract and retain residents.

“This is the first of many Towns Fund-supported developments which will reap huge benefits across our borough in the years to come.”

The acquisition forms part of RBH’s wider plans to invest in Rochdale town centre. RBH also recently acquired the derelict land at the former Redcross Mill site, and has worked with Rochdale Borough Council and Rochdale RSPCA to help Rochdale Animal Centre move to their new premises at Hollingworth Lake.
