‘Pick litter and party away’ is the message Rochdale Boroughwide Housing (RBH) is sending out to the people of Rochdale in a bid to sweep the streets clean.
RBH have signed up to the nationwide campaign ‘Big Tidy Up’ launched this month by Keep Britain Tidy. The campaign is a response to the increasing amounts of unsightly rubbish piling up on our streets and anyone who thinks a Council estate in Rochdale could benefit from a ‘spruce up’ to clear away the debris is being encouraged to ‘Pick n’ Party’.
Chief Executive of Keep Britain Tidy, Phil Barton, said: “The Big Tidy Up will be the biggest organised litter pick this country has ever seen. Thousands of schools, businesses and community groups have already signed up and want to make a difference.”
An unprecedented litter pick across the length and breadth of the country is taking place and RBH are encouraging individuals, groups of friends or neighbours or established groups who want to get involved to contact them with their suggestions for areas to clean up.
Four or five areas will then be chosen and we will work with the group or individuals to plan and organise a tidy up - rewarding them with a party at the end of the day. RBH staff and the Council’s ‘Green Volunteers’ will also muck in to clean up designated areas and it is hoped the whole event will help to foster good community relations and pride in their areas.
Communities First Co-ordinator for RBH, Sue Kershaw, said: “This will be a great opportunity for people to join together, have some fun but also make a real difference to their local community.”
So far 6,000 groups have signed up to the nationwide scheme and it is hoped that half a million bin bags of litter will be collected.
