Lantern Academy has won an award for the Best Youth Service 2021 in the British Beacon Mosque Awards
Rochdale’s Lantern Academy has been named the winner of the ‘Best Youth Service’ award in the 2021 British Beacon Mosque Awards (4 December).
Lantern Academy is a branch of the Golden Mosque which was founded in 1963 as the first mosque in Rochdale. Based on Lower Sheriff Street, the academy is a supplementary school that teaches over 300 students from across the borough of Rochdale from primary to GCSE level in Quran recitation, Islamic studies, maths, English and much more.
The ‘Best Youth Service’ award category looks at mosques that have developed programmes and/or facilities for those under 18 years of age. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, judges assessed how mosques adapted to provide support to the youths in the community and what programmes they had in place post-lockdown.
Mohammed Shahid, Head of Lantern Academy, said: “This is truly an honour.
“I am humbled that our work here at Lantern has been recognised nationally by the British Beacon Mosque Awards 2021.
“We strive in offering the best for our students, nurturing them and educating them in becoming professional young citizens of the country as inevitably they are our next generation.
“This award is dedicated to team Lantern and our students who are our beacons of light who complete the Lantern family. Well done to you all."
Founded by Faith Associates UK, the Beacon Mosque Awards were created in 2018 to highlight the pivotal role mosques and Islamic centres play in local communities and contributing to the UK’s social fabric.
The academy was named the Best Madrassah in the UK 2020 at the same awards.
