Oulder Hill dedicates remembrance garden

Date published: 14 November 2021

Oulder Hill Community School has held a dedication ceremony for its new remembrance garden.

The garden, unveiled on 12 November to special guests, is a place where the secondary school will hold remembrance ceremonies, as well as provide bereavement counselling for students.

Oulder Hill’s memorial garden is a new project, building on the work the school did on its poppy map which won a national award from the Institute of Education.

The garden features a soldier silhouette and a mosaic poppy stone, as well as colourful planters, a sphere water feature and pebbles, which surround decorated benches for reflection.

Attendees of the ceremony included the Vice Lord Lieutenant of Greater Manchester, Sharman Birtles and the Deputy Mayor of Rochdale, Ali Ahmed, various dignitaries from Rochdale and the Royal British Legion and all those who donated to the garden’s creation, including Philip Kersh from Life for a Life, Gill Rothwell, Councillors Rachel Massey and Jim Gartside, Wing Commander David Forbes president of the British Legion in Rochdale, local community PCSOs, governors and staff.

The school's head boy and girl laid a wreath and history ambassadors did a reading.

The remembrance garden formed part of Rochdale’s entry into the North West in Bloom competition, and was awarded a level 2 accolade.
