Norden businessman completes 10k whilst undergoing cancer treatment in aid of charity

Date published: 13 November 2021

The owner of Cudworth of Norden and his son took on the annual Cancer Research UK Manchester Shine Night Walk on 30 October, trekking 10k across the busy streets of Manchester in the dark.

Starting from Castlefield Bowl, the father and son duo - Malcolm Cudworth and his son Greg - smashed the 10k walk through the city centre in the hope of raising some much-needed funds for Cancer Research UK and those affected by bowel cancer in particular.

This comes after a very turbulent and difficult 11 months for Malcolm and his family, when Malcolm was diagnosed with bowel cancer in December 2020, just three days before Christmas, and the outlook was very grim.

Not only has the textile business owner spent these past months going through major surgery but has also undergone three months of chemotherapy. Treatment is still ongoing, but he has managed to gain some of his fitness back and complete the challenge, raising a huge amount of money for a good cause in the process.

So far, the pair have raised £1,785 for the Cancer Research UK charity – a massive 892% of their original £200 target.

68-year-old Malcolm said: "This is something which has touched my life in recent times, and whilst there appears to be a light at the end of the tunnel for me, I am fully aware I am one of the lucky ones.

“Over the past 12 months I have gone through a physical and mental rollercoaster and without the help and support of the fantastic nurses and doctors I have had the pleasure of meeting during a very dark period, I can quite honestly say I would not be here today and on the road to recovery.

“Although the road is still a little rocky; I would like to take this opportunity to give back to a charity which has helped me immensely along the way.”
