Inaugural Littleborough scarecrow festival raises £500 for Reuse Littleborough

Littleborough’s first scarecrow festival has raised an impressive £500 for local cause Reuse Littleborough.

Funds were presented to Reuse’s founder, Michael Bamford, on Saturday (30 October) at their hub in central Littleborough by Vickie Mason, Andy Lord and Craig Chadwick, who set the festival up.

Michael said he was “overwhelmed” by the amount raised, which would be “redirected to another children’s charity.”

This year, 136 scarecrows featured on the route, which spanned from the White House to the Ox and Plough, to Hollingworth Lake, Summit and Shore, raising £512.44 for the cause.

Vickie said: “We set this up with the sole purpose to bring people back together after the 18 months we’ve had. We all wanted to do it a few years ago, but this year it all came together.”

First place was won by Emma and Denise Fleming – who won a luxury chocolate hamper – for their horse and cart entry.

A second-place prize – a £10 gift voucher for the Cherry Tree Café – went to Nicola Tarney for ‘Needle in the bum, nurse’ and third place, won a main meal for two at the King William IV, was won by Happy Jacks Nursery for their ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’ entry.

Next year’s Littleborough Scarecrow Festival will take place from Saturday 17 September until Saturday 1 October 2022.

Votes are being taken for next year’s charity or cause to benefit from the funds raised, and the group is looking to secure more sponsors.
