Canal clean-up volunteers collect 28 bags of plastic and litter

Date published: 18 August 2021

The Canal & River Trust held a successful canal clean-up day on Saturday 24 July, in which volunteers cleared plastic and litter from the Rochdale Canal.

As part of the Canal & River Trust's Green Recovery Project, volunteers from the local Rochdale community collected 28 bags of litter from the water and towpath near Oldham Road. Canoes were also used to reach the litter on the water and along the off-side of the canal.

Gary Wilkinson, Community Engagement Coordinator from the Canal and River Trust said: “I would like to thank everyone who supported our Rochdale Canal Plastics Challenge, it was great to see so many people joining in, having fun and making a difference to their local canal.”

The Green Recovery Project will focus on provide new and improved spaces for wildlife along with strengthening relationship between the Canal & River Trust and existing community groups along the Rochdale Canal, as well as developing new relationships within the Rochdale town centre area.

The canal being such an important wildlife site means the Canal & River Trust are really keen for this project to protect and enhance the site to ensure it stays such a key environmental asset for the local wildlife and community to enjoy.
