Council welcomes new teachers

Newly qualified teachers, who started work in Rochdale's schools last week, were welcomed by the council at the Town Hall last night (Wednesday 18 September).

There are 106 new teachers who started in schools across the town this month. The Council hosted the annual induction and support programme for the new recruits in the main hall yesterday.

The day was opened by Terry Piggott, the Council's Executive Director for education, who outlined the purpose of the programme and the support available for newly qualified teachers.

Other speakers included Principal School Improvement Officer Tony Lasan and Diane King and Eddie Procter from the Teachers' Association. Also taking part were representatives from a wide range of school improvement professionals and teacher associations showcasing the levels of support available.

After the initial speeches the teachers were encouraged to visit a range of stalls to get details about the latest developments in schools services and the extra resources they can tap into such as the School Improvement Service, the Children, Schools and Families Service and the Rochdale Additional Needs Service.

There were also stalls from local organisations such as Touchstones, who were discussing with NQTs the valuable resources that they have at the museum and how it can be of use to them as teachers.

“The day was very well received and we received a good deal of positive feedback,” Said Terry Piggott.
