Healey Care service users mark Learning Disability Week by completing charity walk

Date published: 01 July 2021

Healey Care Ltd service users, the Mayor of Rochdale, and the Mayor of Whitworth completed a walk along Rochdale Canal for charity on Friday (25 June).

A Whitworth company providing a range of support services for adults with learning disabilities and/or autism, Healey Care Ltd organised the event to mark Learning Disability Week, and to also kick off their 25th anniversary celebrations.

Approximately 52 participants - including Healey Care staff, service users, the Mayor of Rochdale Councillor Aasim Rashid, the Mayor of Whitworth Councillor Maureen Jones, and children from Tor View school in Rossendale - set off from Sandbrook Park to walk along the canal.

Armed with collection buckets along the way to raise as much money as possible for charity, the canal was a starting point with level and accessible tracks for people of all abilities and offered routes from two to 10 miles so that everyone could enjoy the opportunity of walking for charity - in this case, for the Friends of Tor View (FoTV).

FoTV is a registered charity branched from Tor View Specialist Learning Community in Haslingden. Valuing ‘equal opportunities for all’, the charity organises a variety of social and fundraising events throughout the year for the school.

Money raised contributes to the cost of items additional to the school’s budget, such as a new school minibus, residential opportunities, and library and playground equipment.

So far, £1,411 has been raised of the initial £500 goal set by Healey Care.

Healey Care Ltd was started by Malachy McElleron with Healey House Whitworth in 1996. The service has now grown to have a number of residential care homes, supported living houses, a day service and a respite service.

The Mayor of Whitworth, Councillor Maureen Jones said: “I would like to thank Healey Care for inviting me to join their 25th anniversary celebrations.

“I congratulate Healey Care for the work they do in Whitworth and the surrounding areas, and I look forward to the next 25 years.”

Healey Care will celebrate 25 years of providing support on Wednesday 14 July 2021.

The achievements of the walkers will also be recognised on this date at a combined celebratory garden party.
