Youngsters take a LEAF-y look at the environment
Date published: 17 September 2008
Hundreds of primary school children across Rochdale will be taking a closer look at their local environment between now and 26 September as the Local Environment Action Fortnight (LEAF) returns for the sixth year.
The special fortnight of activities will see Key Stage 2 youngsters from 25 primary schools learn more about the wonders of water, composting, energy, travel, litter, natural history, and Fairtrade in fun and fascinating ways both in the classroom and in the countryside.
The LEAF fortnight is organised by Rochdale Council in partnership with members from Rochdale Education for Sustainability Network (RESN).
The workshops arranged this year include:
Active travel - in-school activity aimed at arousing pupils’ awareness of sustainable travel, health and the effects of traffic on air quality.
Composting Capers - in-school Interactive composting workshop which will turn pupils into composting experts!
Eco System Explorers - pupils will take part in a range of activities to explore the range of creatures living on their doorsteps. They will see them close up, observe and learn the roles they play in their environment.
International Trade - in-school activity which will see pupils will take part in a simulation game based around international trade. It is an experiential activity which demonstrates the injustice in trading relationships and the inequality between rich and poor countries.
Lethal Litter - pupils will use map reading skills to follow a wildlife trail around the various parks in the borough to discover alarming facts on the threat to wildlife from litter.
Save Energy, Save the Environment - pupils will investigate ways of saving energy at school and home and why this is important.
