Litter picking kits are now available to borrow from Rochdale Borough Council

Date published: 15 May 2021

If you are keen to help keep the borough cleaner and greener, you can now borrow a litter picking kit from Rochdale Borough Council.

Rochdale council workers collect more than 10 tonnes of litter every week, which costs taxpayers in Rochdale a giant £1 million every year.

Now, the council are urging the public to ‘help us reduce the amount we spend on cleaning up rubbish’ by offering the chance to borrow litter picking equipment and ‘make Rochdale borough a better place to live, work and visit’.

There are two different kits available from the council that you can choose from – which both require you to pay a refundable deposit:

  • Kit A - £20 refundable deposit: includes 10 litter pickers, 10 bag holders, 10 high visibility vests, 10 pairs of gloves and a roll of green waste sacks.
  • Kit B - £50 refundable deposit: includes 30 litter pickers, 30 bag holders, 30 high visibility vests, 30 pairs of gloves and a roll of green waste sacks.

A representative for Rochdale Borough Council said: “We get a number of litter picking requests through many local groups and families who want to do their bit to help tackle litter.

“The new deposit scheme is to encourage the return of equipment so that we can accommodate all requests and people are not left disappointed. Deposits are fully refundable upon return.

“We really do appreciate those who take time out of their busy lives to help, alongside the council’s extremely hard-working street cleansing, Clean & Green and enforcement teams who deal with clearing litter and fly-tipping daily.”

If you would like to borrow litter picking equipment, all you need to do is get in touch with Rochdale Council at least two weeks before the date you want to hold your litter pick.

If you would like to hire a litter picking kit, you need to complete a request form which is available on the council's website.
