Walk with ghosts to raise Hospice funds

Date published: 12 September 2008

As part of the special fundraising calendar organised to celebrate Springhill Hospice’s 20th Anniversary year, there will be a spine-chilling Ghost Walk around Hollingworth Lake on Halloween night (Friday 31 October).

Ian Jenkins, Fundraising Manager at the hospice, explains: “I was approached by a friend of mine, Peter Thornton, who asked whether I knew of the many grisly stories connected with the Lake and it’s environs. When he began to tell me about them, and how it would be fantastic to put together a Ghost Walk, I couldn’t resist.”

Amongst the stories Peter will unfold on the night will be the tale of the Rag Hole Boggart, a report by Edwin Waugh of the tragic drowning of three youths and what happened to the Manchester Regiment once they had left their camp at Ealees embankment.

Mr Jenkins added: “I was amazed at the amount of material Peter was able to amass about the Lake and the surrounding area – it’s quite shocking!”

The walk will start at the Rowing Club Car Park at 10:30pm.

Intrepid ghost-hunters should contact Mr Jenkins at the hospice on 01706 649920 to book their place on the walk, which is due to last until midnight.

Places are strictly limited and tickets are priced at £7.50 per person, which includes a hot drink at the halfway point to calm the nerves before the witching hour!
