Springhill Hospice marks National Day of Reflection

A Day of Reflection will be held across the UK on Tuesday, with a minute’s silence and a national doorstep vigil due to take place to mark the anniversary of the UK’s first coronavirus lockdown.

Springhill Hospice will mark the occasion by lighting their Light Up A Life tree in the hospice grounds, joining thousands of people across our local community to reflect on the losses faced over the last 12 months and the challenges the nation has experienced.

The pandemic has had a huge impact on Springhill’s ability to provide nursing, care and wellbeing services both in the community and at the hospice, with their clinical teams having to adapt the way they work to ensure those in need continue to get the highest standards of care.

The 2021 Day of Reflection presents an opportunity for us all to reflect on how people in the borough have pulled together to support each other. Springhill will reflect on how you, as a local community, have supported patient care, and how, as a team, they have overcome difficulties to ensure continuity of care.

It’s been a challenging year financially for Springhill Hospice with major fundraising events cancelled, shops closed for much of the year and supporters not able to fundraise in the same way.

Emily Kennedy, Head of Income Generation and Marketing at Springhill Hospice, said: “Our local community has stepped up to go above and beyond, helping to support patient care at Springhill, filling the shortfall from the cancellation of events and the closure of our shops.

“We are so proud and inspired by the lengths our supporters have gone to and the weird and wonderful ways they have fundraised for the hospice.”

Whilst there are still difficult days and uncertainty ahead, the Day of Reflection gives us all a chance to pause and reflect on our collective loss, support those who've been bereaved, and hope for a brighter future.

Springhill’s tree of lights will shine brightly throughout the night in solidarity for those who have been affected by the coronavirus pandemic and as a beacon of hope for the future.
