Fire Fighters are all in a lather

Date published: 10 September 2008

This weekend promises to be a treat for those who keep putting off washing the car, as The Fire Fighters Charity National Car Wash 2008 rolls into Rochdale.

The event, taking place on Saturday (13 September) at Rochdale Fire Station, will also be an opportunity for people to have a chat about their personal fire safety with the fire fighters, while their car is being given a gleaming polish.

The day will be a chance to get involved with a genuinely important cause, brush up on your home fire safety and drive away with a spotlessly clean car.

There is a very serious reason as to why this event is taking place at Fire Stations across the UK; to raise much needed funds for The Fire Fighters Charity – the UK’s Fire Charity. In return for cleaning your car, fire fighters will be asking for a small donation in order to support the Fire Fighters Charity.

Boxer Ricky Hatton is supporting this year’s event, which is taking place at fire stations across Greater Manchester. Ricky ‘The Hitman’ Hatton said: “I applaud the bravery of the Fire Fighters who routinely put themselves in harm's way, making split-second decisions to save lives. They are the ones jumping into a burning building when everyone else is jumping out.

"The Fire Fighters Charity helps support these undisputed champions, both physically and emotionally, enabling them to return to work faster. By stopping to have your car washed on 13 September, you can help raise greatly needed funds for the Charity, whilst also educating your family about fire safety. By taking a little more care in the home, we should be able to knock-out accidental fires altogether, leading to fewer accidents and, ultimately, fewer innocent deaths.”

County Fire Officer Barry Dixon said: “The National Car Wash Day is a great opportunity for us to raise money for a worthwhile cause which has benefited many fire fighters and their families over the years. For just one day we hope to see thousands of gleaming cars on the streets of Greater Manchester.”

So if you have a dirty car and can’t be bothered cleaning it then take it to Rochdale fire station near you and let a fire fighter do it for you.
