Clampdown on underage drinking

Date published: 05 September 2008

Rochdale North Neighbourhood Policing Team arrested seven people last weekend during an initiative to tackle underage drinking.

Among the areas targeted were Springfield Park, Falinge Park, Bamford Precinct and Gale Street.

Officers also carried out 46 stop checks and visited local off-licences to ensure alcohol was not being sold illegally.

In addition, 28 cans and 14 bottles of lager were seized along with eight bottles of wine and spirits.

Inspector James Troisi of the Rochdale North Neighbourhood Policing Team said: “Young people and parents who provide alcohol need to know they will be dealt with robustly, as drink fuels the majority of anti-social and
intimidating behaviour.

“Operations like this are proving successful, and we have seen 113 fewer reported incidents of anti-social behaviour during August this year compared to last year. This is a testament to some of the excellent partnership work that is ongoing.”
