Puppy undergoes surgery after heartless thieves break his leg

Date published: 21 August 2020

This seven-month old puppy has undergone orthopaedic surgery for a broken leg after being beaten by heartless thieves who broke into his house in broad daylight whilst his elderly owners were out.

Staffordshire terrier Bruno was found shaking on the stairs by his owners when they returned to their Belfield home on Friday (14 August), discovering they not only had been burgled - with the thieves taking items of jewellery - but that their beloved pet had been left with a broken leg by the thugs.

Bruno underwent surgery on Tuesday (18 August) at the cost of £2,130 – funded through the generosity of people of the Rochdale borough through a crowdfunder appeal started by Amanda Porter, who works at Vets4Pets Rochdale.

Amanda said: “Our client has given permission for me to share his story. I’m so heartbroken for them; seeing an elderly man cry is something I cannot put into words.

“The attack was so bad that Bruno was left with a fractured leg. The saddest part is he wouldn’t have reacted to them [the thieves] in the house as he’s such a sweetheart.

“Please, let’s help them get back on their feet and restore their faith in humanity.”

Bruno – now dubbed the ‘bionic dog’ by his owner – has since been offered free hydrotherapy sessions at K9 Splash, Amanda confirmed, to aid in his recovery.

The incident has been reported to the police.

A police spokesperson said: “At around 1.15pm on Friday 14 August 2020, police were called to reports of a burglary at a property on Albert Royds Street, Rochdale.

“Officers attended and an investigation is underway.

“Anyone with information should contact police quoting 1620 of 14/08/20 or the independent charity - Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.”
