GCSE results: local students find out their grades

Date published: 21 August 2020

Pupils around the country have received the GCSE results that will allow them to move on to the next stages of their lives - with 76% of entries getting grades 9-4.

Over 600,000 students got their results yesterday (Thursday 20 August) despite not having taken exams while schools and colleges were closed to stop the spread of coronavirus.

All students have been awarded the centre assessment grade submitted by their school, unless their calculated grade was higher. The centre assessment grades were devised by teachers who know their students best, and signed off by the headteacher or college principal. These grades were based on a range of evidence including mock exams and coursework as well as work in class and homework.

It means on average pupils this year have higher grades than in previous years.

Here's how some of our local schools did:

Beech House

Year 11 sat their GCSE English Literature, English Language and Foundation Mathematics in January. Their results boded well for the summer with the school expecting a ‘bumper crop’ of results. As nobody could predict, this turned out to be the only formal GCSE examinations Year 11 would sit.

In English 24% of the pupils achieved a grade 9 and 77% achieved a grade 7 or above. The pass rate at grade 5 or above in English was 94%. All the pupils were entered at the Foundation Level in Mathematics, with 69% obtaining a grade 4 or 5. These achievements were backed up by the teacher assessments in the summer.

Special mention goes to the two Head Girls, Nicole Healey and Ella Raw, who achieved five grade 9s each. Omar Afzal also deserves a mention for his four grade 9s.

A fifth of all grades have been achieved in the top band of 7 to 9 and learners continue to perform most strongly across the EBacc subjects. In English, Science and Mathematics 70% of learners achieved at least a Grade 4, with performance in RE especially impressive, almost a third of learners achieving top band grades.

Moreover, the strong showing across the board resulted in 18 learners at Matthew Moss achieving the highest Grade 9 in at least one subject. Notable individual performances include Hassan Irshad, who made outstanding progress; Fawazaz Hussain (five Grade 9s); Hamza Yassin (four Grade 9s); Zenib Shahid (three Grade 9s and six Grade 8s); and Marium Ashfaq (two Grade 9s and six Grade 8s.

Headteacher Mark Moorhouse said: “Great results like these are always the result of the combined efforts of staff, learners, parents and carers and never more so than this year, when everyone has had to pull together under such difficult circumstances.

“These fantastic results are a testament to the whole community and its commitment to supporting our young people with such dedication and fortitude.

“Collectively, we did our job and we should be very proud of our achievements.”

“It was lovely to see students back in school and we are so very proud of their GCSE results. They worked so hard and that must not be taken away from them. Our students have had some standout performances, with many students leaving us with the top grades across the board.

“We look forward to opening our doors in September and getting back to some form of normality.”

Wardle Academy

Mr Hesketh, headteacher, said: “Well done and congratulations to the class of 2020 on their incredible GCSE exam results.

“In particular, we are celebrating the number of young people who have made outstanding progress, the amount of students who have secured the highest grades, the progress of disadvantaged students and the amount of students who have secured their first choice progression route.

“These achievements are testimony to five years of incredibly hard work by students and staff and the unconditional support of families and friends. We know you will use your successes as a stepping stone to further success in the future.

“We are immensely proud of everyone and all of your achievements.”
