Four new scooters for Rochdale Shopmobility

Date published: 14 August 2020

Rochdale Shopmobility has received a grant from The Dowager Countess Eleanor Peel Trust (DCEPT) to replace some of its old mobility scooters.

Following the grant from DCEPT in April, who support charities operating in support of the elderly and 'people who have fallen on evil days through no fault of their own', Rochdale Shopmobility purchased four new scooters in July from supplier Keep Active Mobility Ltd. Upon delivery, Keep Active also kindly completed the scooter annual service free of charge, which was an added bonus.

A photo opportunity arose to share the good news when the Mayor of Rochdale, Councillor Billy Sheerin, presented manager Michelle Hollinrake and treasurer of the charity, Mark Foxley, with a cheque from The Mayor's Charity Fund.

Mayor Sheerin said: “I was thrilled that Michelle and Mark brought a new scooter to the town hall for me to see. I must say the scooters are absolutely brilliant.

"The local charity helps people with mobility problems beyond all measures; without them a lot of locals would not be able to get out to where they need or want to be in the town.

"It is great to have this facility in Rochdale and Shopmobility will always have my full support."

Located on River Street, close to the Rochdale Interchange, Rochdale Shopmobility opened in September 1993, providing members with wheelchairs and scooters so that all can access the town centre’s facilities with ease and enjoyment.

Registering as a charity in June 1995, the organisation charges a membership fee of just £10 per year for use of its facilities for three hours each day.

Shobmobility was initially located in the former bus station prior to its demolition, before moving to a temporary site on Baillie Street.

It moved into its permanent base on River Street in July 2015.

Opening hours are Monday to Friday 9.30am to 4.30pm and Saturday 9.30am to 12.30pm.
