Bev Yarwood is named as new president of Rotary Middleton

Bev Yarwood has been named as Rotary Club of Middleton’s new president.

Bev took the reins during an online ceremony via Zoom on Monday 29 June, taking over from the 2019-2020 president, Janice Sawle.

Bev will be supported by the newly instated vice president, Helen Jungmayr.

Along with her commitment with Rotary, having been a member of Rotary Middleton for four years, Bev also helps and supports many charities.

This includes her chosen charity for her presidential year – Transport for Ugandan Sick Children (TUSC), a small charity organisation which provides transport for sick and disabled children, pregnant women and others with health needs from villages around Jinja, Uganda, to clinics and hospitals. 

 

 

Bev said: "I want to thank Janice and the club members for their hard work and commitment. 

"I am very conscious of the tasks ahead and glad to have the support of fellow members to help deliver our ambitious programme of events and fundraising for the coming year."   

During the online meeting, members celebrated their successes during Janice’s year as president, including:

• Buzzin’ Book Bonanza at MiddFest when the club gave a free book to every child
• Marshalling of the 3,000 children that took part in IronKids in Bolton
• Turned St. Leonard’s Parish Church purple for a week in October for World Polio Day and to raise awareness of the End Polio Now campaign
• In Middleton Shopping Centre the club ran a ‘Know Your Blood Pressure’ day on Saturday 28 October where health professionals were available to test blood pressure and offer advice
• The club scared the wits out of Middletonians during Halloween with their ScareFest tours around the Old Cemetery and Canky’s passage
• In November they held their whiskey tasting evening at the Masonic Hall, raising much needed funds for a school in Kenya and the Rotary Foundation
• Christmas saw the running of the annual Christmas Float tour of Middleton streets which raised money for distribution to local groups and charities

Outgoing president Janice’s chosen charity for her year was Rochdale and District Mind, with the funds to be targeted towards support in the community for dementia. £2,000 has been donated to them.

Janice said: "I would thank all members for their huge efforts over the previous year. Our usual programme of activities had to be altered and some events were postponed due to the Coronvirus pandemic, but I was delighted with what Rotary Middleton has achieved despite this.  

"I wish Bev every success for her term."

Vice president Helen Jungmayr said: "It has been an interesting time where we made the change, which we had been considering, of meeting on Zoom out of necessity. It has been invaluable for our members to 'meet' and continue to building on our fellowship."

Rotary International in Great Britain & Ireland is a membership and humanitarian service organisation. Through membership of their local Rotary club, members use their time and talents to make a difference in their own communities and around the world.

There are over 1,750 clubs in Great Britain and Ireland with 48,000 members, and Rotary Middleton is looking for new members interested in supporting and fund-raising for good causes in Middleton.
