Broadfield Hotel closure throws wedding plans into chaos

Date published: 27 August 2008

The Broadfield Hotel has gone into administration. Irate staff and customers have been at the hotel on Sparrow Hill within the last couple of hours (Wednesday 27 August) to voice their anger, only to find the building boarded up and in the process of being gutted.

Many couples have had their wedding plans thrown into jeopardy with the news that the hotel has shut down. Customers have been told that they will receive letters within the next few days officially informing them that the hotel has gone bust, which they can then use as proof to credit card companies and banks to reimburse their accounts.

Lawrence Glendinning and his fiancee were set to be married at the Broadfield next month but their plans are now completely up in the air. Lawrence said: "I'm absolutely fuming. I only found out this afternoon because our hire car company phoned us and told us that the hotel had gone into liquidation.

"We paid £1,200 in total to book the hotel. It looks as though we will be able to get that money back but there are other costs. We've made arrangements with the cars, invitations have been printed and now we just don't know what to do."

Some members of staff reportedly turned up at the hotel to start their shifts this afternoon with no knowledge that the hotel had shut down.

Lawrence and his fiancee are not the only ones to suffer with the venue booked up throughout next month, with one wedding scheduled for as early as this Saturday.

The hotel has had a high turnover of staff with several chefs and managers and Rochdale Online reported this time last year that owner, Andrew Kusytsch, a property developer from London, had been caught deceiving potential guests by giving his own hotel a rave review on the Active Hotels website!

As a result of the report Mr Kusytsch cancelled his advertising with Rochdale Online.

Rochdale Council's Tourism Officer Tim Nuttall felt sorry for those that had lost their jobs but believes there is no need for the other hotels and restaurants in the area to panic. "I do not know the reasons behind the closure but it is a shame for Rochdale town centre and a shame for the people who work there," he said.

"I'm sure it can rise again to go with other places in the borough that offer top quality services.

"I think other hotels in Rochdale are very positive at the moment, with fully booked up occupancies, and they are positive about their future."
