The opening of Queen's Park's ‘bog garden’

A new ‘bog garden’ has been created in Heywood’s Queen’s Park.

The grand opening for the new garden was attended by Mayor Billy Sheerin along with councillors Peter Rush, Carol Wardle and Susan Emmott on Friday (28 February). The bog garden has been created out of an old swimming pool which has lain derelict for many years.

Friends of Queen’s Park joined with Heywood in Bloom to refurbish the area and create a feature which would link up with the arrival of Dippy at Riverside in Rochdale.

Other attendees included representatives from Argos, Township and Green Lane.

Having secured funding from ‘The Big Life’ work started last year, Tree Heroes Ltd dug the area out and laid a wide path through the garden. Volunteers from Argos’ warehouse, who were working in the park, gave their time to assist with the digging and planting.

The family of the late Jack Stanway made a donation in his memory which contributed to the funding. The T. Rex which has just been installed was made by DDH Fabrications.

Chair of Heywood in Bloom, Ellen Wintle-Yates thanked the Mayor for attending and opening the new garden. She also thanked all those involved in the ongoing work for their support.

Ellen thanked the park gardeners and Green Lane for all their help, with special thanks to Tracy Hibbert, whose support has been “invaluable” throughout.
