Support Harry and Help Save Lives
Date published: 26 August 2008
Harry Alldritt, a well known Middleton personality, is embarking on a walk of almost 300 miles on 13 September to raise money for the British Heart Foundation, one of the Mayor's Charities for this year.
Harry, who runs the Middleton Community Training Centre, suffered a major heart attack at Christmas 2002. He reckons that he wouldn't be here today without the skill and dedication of all those who looked after his treatment in North Manchester Hospital and at Manchester Royal Infirmary and without all the advances in the diagnosis and treatment of heart disease that have been achieved through the BHF. He sees this as a chance to say thank you and to raise money that will help to maintain the BHF's vital work.
Harry's challenge is to walk almost 300 miles along the Pennine Way from Edale to Kirk Yetholm. The walk starts at 10.00 am on Saturday 13th September and is expected to take 8 days - although adverse weather conditions could add on a day or two. Before travelling to Edale for the start of the walk Harry will be given a strong send off from Middleton by a group of supporters including Jim Dobbin MP, Councillor Robin Parker, the Mayor, and other friends and family members.
The walk will be dedicated to the life of Malcolm Collinge, one of Harry's closest friends, who died earlier this month, aged 64, after suffering a heart attack at his home in Middleton. Harry said of his friend: "Malcolm would never say no to anybody. He was always helping out in Middleton for the good of the town and the people. That is why I want to do something for him now, by completing this walk. Malcolm was a great friend and in many ways he is irreplacable."
Harry is an experienced walker and a real action man at the heart of the Middleton community. He has a tremendous record as a charity fundraiser and is now keen to get as much support as possible for his walk. "The BHF is a really good cause" he said " and I'm hoping that all my friends and contacts will help to raise sponsor money for the walk. After all so many of us are touched by heart disease that its in all our interests to support the work of the BHF."
