Nominations close soon for Pride of Manchester Awards 2020
Date published: 20 February 2020
Karen Johnson from Rochdale won a Special Recognition Pride of Britain Award in 2016
2020 sees the return of the Pride of Manchester Awards, which will recognise the region’s amazing unsung heroes and celebrate ordinary people who have done extraordinary things.
Do you know someone who is quietly transforming their community to improve the lives of others, someone who has put themselves in danger to save someone else, an inspirational campaigner or an amazing fundraiser? They could be six or 106 – heroism has no age barrier. And they could have changed one life or changed the world. This year’s categories include Outstanding Bravery, Emergency Services, Child/Teenager of Courage, Fundraiser of the year, TSB Community Partner, Young Fundraiser, Special Recognition and Lifetime Achievement.
As well as being honoured with a Pride of Manchester Award, all winners will go forward to the judging process for the Daily Mirror’s Pride of Britain Awards in partnership with TSB, which airs on ITV later in the year. Who could forget little Ella Chadwick from Rochdale who stole the show with her cheeky chat as she received her Child of Courage Award from the X Factor judges. Since the first Pride of Britain in 1999, royalty, prime ministers, and hundreds of leading figures from showbusiness, sport, politics and the arts have all taken part.
Last year’s incredible Pride of Manchester winners included the father of murdered PC Nicola Hughes, who used his grief to raise more than £300,000 to support young people bereaved by violent crime, a 79-year-old man who risked his life to tackle a gunman trying to rob his local Conservative Club, a courageous seven-year-old girl whose inspirational performance of ‘Fight Song’ while battling cancer racked up millions of views on YouTube and there was a special award for the Spirit of Manchester, which honoured the way the city came together after the 2017 Manchester Arena bomb refusing to let hate triumph over love.
Pride of Manchester host Kym Marsh said: “Pride of Manchester is the most amazing night of the year and I’m absolutely thrilled to be hosting it again. Last year’s winners were incredible and I can’t wait to see who is nominated this year. I hope everyone takes a few minutes to go online to tell us about the people they know who deserve to be recognised.”
Nominations close on Wednesday 26 February and the winners will be announced at a star-studded event in May.
Lynsay Thomson, TSB Manchester Area Director said: “There are thousands of ordinary people right across Britain who do extraordinary things every day to help others in their local communities. At TSB we’re proud to be part of the community in Manchester and want to shine a light on our local heroes and ensure their dedication and commitment is recognised.”
