Army of Kindness spreads Christmas cheer by helping those in need

Date published: 05 January 2020

The volunteer group Army of Kindness spread Christmas cheer to those in need, with a special Christmas Day event at St Andrew’s Church.

In true Christmas spirit, the special Christmas dinner saw people from all walks of life attend, with everyone coming together from asylum seekers and refugees to homeless people and those who are vulnerable or lonely.

Volunteers aged between 15 and 70 all gave up their time on the day to help those in need, with the younger people dressing as Santa and elves, as they handed out presents out to those who visited.

Free hair cuts were given by a barber, whilst local politicians attended and helped serve the families, including Rochdale MP Tony Lloyd, Councillor Mohammed Zaman and the council leader, Councillor Allen Brett.

Over 200 people attended throughout the day.

Senior volunteers Denise Chadwick and Mohammed Zaheer said: “We want to say a big thank you to everyone who volunteered their time at St Andrew’s Church on Christmas Day, helping to put a smile on people’s faces.

“We would also like to thank the main sponsor, the Al-Khair Foundation, all the businesses and individuals who donated, and St Andrew’s Church for the venue.

“Thank you once again.”

The Army of Kindness is there to help and support others in need throughout the year, meeting at Eden House at the Old Magistrates’ Court soup kitchen near Rochdale police station every Tuesday from 5.30pm-7pm.
