Whitworth Youth Club members make caring gifts

Date published: 08 December 2019

Caring members of Whitworth Youth Club have been sewing patchwork blankets to give as Christmas presents to elderly residents of a care home.

Two of the members of the Wednesday Club at the 515 Young People’s Centre in Market Street, are Mia Tighe and Paris Warburton.

They are also students at Whitworth Community High School and they were invited by Youth Leader Sarah Corke to receive a cheque from Co-op in Whitworth for £250 to support the group’s projects.

Paris, 12, said: “The Youth Club leader Sarah decided it would be good to set up a girls’ group and we do projects over eight weeks.

“We are currently half-way through making blankets and when finished we will be taking them to the residents of Barley View.

“I had done some sewing in primary school and we have had four people coming in to show us what to do.”

Mia, 13, added: “I have sewn all my squares together now and I just need to fill it.”

There are about 10 members in the girls’ group and they will be working on a new project once the blankets have been finished.

The youth club has also applied for national funding from the Co-operative.
