New fire museum plans released

Date published: 26 November 2019

The Greater Manchester Fire Service Museum in Rochdale has released preview images of its stunning new attraction scheduled to open in 2020.

The museum is moving from its current premises in the rear yard of Rochdale’s former Maclure Road fire station into the main building fronting Maclure Road, which is being completely restored thanks to National Lottery and other funding, and will be more than four times the size of the existing site.

As part of the redevelopment process, the museum is keen to share its plans with the local community, especially people who may have never visited before.

“The museum, just like the Fire and Rescue Service, is there for all sections of the community and we want as many different people to enjoy our offer as possible,” said museum curator Bob Bonner.

“This wonderful, 1933 art deco fire station building is one of Rochdale’s best-loved landmarks and after almost six years lying idle is now being brought back to life through this fantastic project.”

Construction work is expected to begin in early January and will take almost a year. The existing museum will remain open for several months.

The plans and images will be available for inspection (and comment) during the museum’s Christmas Open Day event on Sunday 1 December.

This is one of the major events of the year and will feature funfair, and fire engine, rides and a visit from Santa.

The event runs from 10am to 4pm with free admission but a small charge to meet Santa with gift.

Bob added: “This is the public’s opportunity to have a close look at our intentions, share their thoughts with us and have a great time at the open day as well.

“Our exhibition designers, The Creative Core, will be on hand to answer any questions whilst the younger visitors can enjoy all our special attractions on the day.”
