Middleton In Bloom scooped an impressive set of ‘Advancing’, ‘Thriving’ and ‘Outstanding’ awards at the RHS North West in Bloom Awards in Southport on Wednesday (30 October).
This year saw notable accolades for a number of first-time entries, with Croft Community Garden Society and Alkrington Court both being awarded a level four ‘Thriving’ and Tonge Court being awarded a level three ‘Advancing’.
Impressively, first-time entry St Michael’s Garden Gang gained a level five ‘Outstanding’ – the top level for the North West It's Your Neighbourhood category – with the group also receiving a special RHS award for involving children and young people.
Previous entries Status 4 All, Historic Cheapside and Springvale Youth Centre all progressed, being awarded level four ‘Thriving’, level five ‘Outstanding’, and level five ‘Outstanding’, respectively.
Chisholm Court also gained a level three ‘Advancing’ whilst Hope Middleton Community Garden gained a level four ‘Thriving’.
Keeley O’Mara, Secretary of Middleton in Bloom, said: “We are so proud of all our It’s Your Neighbourhood entries. They have all done exceptionally well and all their hard work paid off.”
Middleton in Bloom formed as a community group in February 2017. The group members include Middleton Technology Secondary School, St Michael’s CE Primary School, Middleton Rotary Club, Rochdale Boroughwide Housing, Riverside’s ‘Your Place’, Middleton Township, Middleton Town Centre Management, Friends’ of groups, local businesses, local residents and volunteers.
The regional North West in Bloom competition consists of two judging days. The first is a guided tour taking in areas of interest around Middleton; the second allows for visits to community-based projects that include local schools, allotments, health and well-being projects and conservation areas.
Each entry is marked on its individual merit and can gain a maximum level five award.
Keeley added: “We are hoping that more community groups will enter the Its Your Neighbourhood section next year. We would like to have some Friends groups, alleyways and more businesses to be involved.”
