Residents urged to give views on Rochdale’s latest savings plans

Rochdale Borough Council is consulting residents on the first set of savings proposals that will help save an estimated £32.2 million from its budget.

The savings need to be made for 2020/21 and 2021/22 following further reductions in government funding and increased demand for services. The council has already had to cut £180.1 million spending over the last decade.

Council leader Allen Brett said: “Yet again we continue to receive significant government cuts to our funding that will further impact our borough and disproportionately hit some of the most vulnerable people. Even though demand for services has increased, the government continues to slash our funding. 

"While we will continue working hard to identify savings that have the least impact on our residents, we must be realistic about the fact that there will be more difficult decisions to be made. We have no option but to set a balanced budget. The council has less money to spend, so we want to make sure we always focus on what matters to our residents – so please do take part in this consultation, give feedback and tell us what is really important.”

Details of the proposals are available on the council web site. Information will also be available in local libraries and council Customer Service Centres, where residents can use the free computers.

Residents have from now until 13 December 2019 to give their views.
