Help wanted to find historic Cleggswood addresses

Date published: 02 November 2019

Rochdale Online’s readers are being asked to locate several historic addresses in Littleborough.

Mark Robinson, whose maternal grandparents were from Littleborough, is trying to locate Cleggswood Cottage, Cleggswood Terrace and Cleggswood Road, believed to be near Hollingworth Road.

He said: “Census records from 1870 and 1880 show the names of Cleggswood Cottage, Cleggswood Terrace and Cleggswood Road in my family tree and they appear many times with the family name Howarth. I can find Cleggs Wood, the mine, the farm, but not the road, terrace or cottage.

“Maybe they are the same address, but I believe them to be near the canal bridge/Inghams area.

“I am aware of its connection to Butterworth and that there is a Cleggswood Avenue near Hollingworth Lake, but can find no other trace on any old maps I can access. It may be that Hollingworth Road was Cleggswood Road at one time as it borders the Cleggswood area but again there is no obvious record of that name change.

“I have asked a few people, but no one seems to know of the location.

“I hope Rochdale Online’s readers can help.”

Mark has tried the local history society and contacted the local studies library.
