Playing fields given to Kingsway Park High School

Date published: 28 October 2019

Playing fields backing onto Sedgley Avenue have been given to Kingsway Park High School.

The fields are legally designated as school playing fields, formerly belonging to the former St Joseph's Middle School on Turf Hill Road, which became Springhill High then Kingsway Park following a merger with Balderstone Technology College in 2010.

Fencing is now being erected around the site.

Mark Robinson, assistant director of economy at Rochdale Borough Council, said: “Although this site has been used informally as a recreation area for members of the public, it is legally designated as school playing fields and was historically used by a school which stood on the site before Kingsway Park.

“A decision was made to transfer the site to Kingsway Park High School to support their growth in pupil numbers which created a need for additional recreation facilities.

“As this does not constitute any change in formal use, there was no requirement to consult members of the public.”
