Former mayor presents cheque to community clean up group

Date published: 24 October 2019

Former mayor of the borough of Rochdale, Councillor Mohammed Zaman, presented a cheque of £300 to the representatives of the Rochdale Environmental Action Group (REAG) on Saturday 19 October 2019.

Councillor Zaman said: "This is a small amount but it is in recognition and appreciation of the hard work of all members of the REAG to improve the environment in the borough of Rochdale. They come out every Saturday morning to clean the roads, streets and areas around businesses, churches, mosques and open areas.

"This amount is part of the money raised for the Mayor's Charity during my Mayoral year. I felt that there are small organisations whose members have been working hard for many years that should be acknowledged and the amount raised should be shared with them."

Ghulam Rasul Shahzad OBE, secretary of the REAG with George Lee, publicity secretary and member Marica Graovac, received the cheque on behalf of the REAG and thanked Councillor Zaman.

Ghulam said: "We are thankful to you, Rochdale Borough Council, councillors, businesses, residents and organisations for their continued support. Despite our domestic and other commitments, we come out every Saturday morning and if anyone wishes to join us, you would be most welcome.

"The borough of Rochdale is beautiful and with collective efforts to improve its environment, we can make it more environmentally friendly and safer, by spending some time cleaning the areas around our properties and businesses."

Rochdale Environmental Action Group (REAG) meet every Saturday at 10am at Castlemere Community Centre, Tweedale Street, Rochdale OL11 1HH.
